Dubious distinction: The battle fought in Greensboro on March 15, 1781 was the largest, most hotly-contested fight in the Southern colonies during the Revolutionary War. The serious loss of British manpower suffered at Guilford Courthouse helped lead to an American victory at Yorktown seven months later. Located in western North Carolina, Greensboro was founded in 1808 and named for a Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene. The city was home to regional hubs for the U.S. Postal Service and Sears, as well as manufacturing facilities for Lorillard Tobacco and Western Electric. The city was also a key battleground during the civil rights movement in the 1960s, including a world famous sit-in staged by four local youths at the local Woolworth department store in 1960.
